That first summer-–I was sixteen—she decided I needed to know how to feed my dates. If I was cooking, her theory went, I wasn't necking. She taught me a simple skillet stew: ground beef or sliced hot dogs, canned Irish potatoes or yams, some celery or tomato perhaps. Two decades later August would often find her sitting at the table opposite my small daughter, showing her how to roll a cookie or plotting that year’s birthday cake.
