In My Mother's Kitchen
My mother began cooking in this kitchen in the summer of 1963. She joined a long line of women, a couple of them whaling captains' wives, who have stirred and talked and watched the grass out the narrow windows. Town records suggest that the house was built around 1800. The kitchen wing was added before 1833. My mother spent her last summer here in 2000. She was 88 and could no longer manage the stairs.
