The road Wanderer follows after leaving Kwan Yin leads to a green and pleasant land. But the summer cannot last. A journey through sand and snow leads her to Europe, where she encounters various arts and cultures and even meets the Queen.
In Book Four, Wanderer continues her journey by sea. The landscape where she is set down is a bit desolate after the palace, and despite friendly advice she finds herself in dark and darker places. On the brink of despair she remembers the beautiful wood and Kwan Yin. It is time, she realizes, to go home. Retracing her steps through golden field and flowering wood, she finds it at last. The place where she began.
